STARSTRIKERS

We kind of rushed getting Starstrikers to the press last year. As a result it really needed a professional edit. Being my first novel, it also had some very clunky prose. So to rectify all that and to beef up the cover, I am opening this discussion thread to anyone who has a helpful suggestion on how to improve the Starstrikers novel.

The Second Edition will be launched in early 2010 and be included in the GB Press lineup. No more CreateSpace. It will have its own ISBN and distributor.

I'm reading it through again now, making notes. Would like to focus more on the Starstrikers this time. May add some scenes with them. Just looking to polish it. The whole excerpt from Starforgers will not be in the Second Edition.

First suggestion I will make is to say to NOT rely on the spell checker. There are correctly spelled words incorrectly used throughout the first edition. For example, 'site' should be used instead of 'sight' and vice versa. I think I pointed out quite a few of those previously. I hate to say it, but I think you should do the writing and when presented with a misspelling, take care of each individually rather than letting the spell checker take care of them.

I gather you're moving to a different editing platform so it may not be that much of an issue with the new platform. Just something to keep in mind.

By paying to have it edited, things like that "should" go away. My biggest peeve is the clunky wording. Again, post real editing, we should see improvement in readability. I'm already finding things that were not as obvious to me last year.

Thinking about changing some things on the cover for the Second Edition.

Front Cover: First thing is to take away the Galaxy Collision Series subtitle and make the Starstrikers title a titch bigger. Probably add a quote to the top, maybe one sentence long with a byline. Up the font size on my name to give it more weight.

On the spine: Bigger title, addition of GB Press logo.

Back Cover: Up the fidelity of the Eclipse picture. Remove the Kindle text. Add the GB Press logo. Maybe add some smaller ships to the space picture, have them bleed over on the spine to add interest.

Boise Weekly Quote

I was quoted in a local paper today. “The people that work [at Rediscovered] really know books very well. They’re not afraid to talk up the local authors,” says McConnell. “That helps me as a writer who lives here, and it can only help the community to get to know those writers that do live here.” Cool.  [...]

Baker’s Dozen

I’ll be appearing at Rediscovered Bookshop this coming Saturday, the 21st of November with 12 other Idaho writers in Baker’s Dozen.  The event got a nice write-up in the local paper here.  I spoke with a reporter from the Boise Weekly, on Friday, so I expect a similar that article this week, also on Baker’s [...]
